Austin could see severe storm chances Wednesday and Thursday, through weekend, NWS says

Severe storm weather is headed to the Austin area on Wednesday and Thursday, with more chances for rain over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday's storm chances will be highest between 4 and 7 p.m., said Orlando Bermudez, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in New Braunfels. The daily high is expected to reach into the low 90s with a heat index of 105 degrees.

Bermudez said Thursday's storms could produce less than a 10th of an inch of rainfall. Areas north of Austin will receive a maximum of a quarter of an inch. The system is more likely to produce large hail and damaging winds, with a very small chance for tornados, he said. The hot and sticky conditions will continue, with highs of 90 and heat indexes in the high 90s to low 100s. The morning low will be 73 degrees.

Severe storms are projected to make landfall in the Austin-area between Wednesday to Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

A mild cold front will drop temperatures from Friday through the weekend. Morning lows are expected to be in the 60s, and Friday's high will reach the low 80s. Rain chances will be minimal.

Rain chances will return Saturday, with a 20% chance of storms. The first round of heavy showers is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning, with a quarter to half inch of rain predicted. Daily highs will hover from the high 70s to low 80s, with lows expected in the upper 60s. The second round of showers will come Sunday morning to afternoon, with a chance for a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall to close out the weekend, Bermudez said.
