Austin ranked best taco city in the US — above San Antonio, according to study

The great Texas Taco War is a never-ending fight that has two cities feuding for the top spot. The breakfast taco debate is often central to the bout, and though a truce may have been called between the cities, each of them has a pride to protect.

No, Dallas is not one of them (obviously). Yes, Austin came out on top for the second year in a row in a recent study done by Real Estate Witch that ranked the top 50 cities for tacos in America. Its eternal rival, San Antonio, ranked fourth, behind San Jose, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada. El Paso isn't even on the list.

The rankings were based on taco restaurants per 100,000 residents, average Yelp star rating, average cost of taco supplies and other factors.

Austin had the highest percentage of restaurants that are taco places at 7.4%, while San Antonio came in at 5.2%. Despite falling behind in sheer volume, San Antonio's "taco passion" was rated at 100 over Austin's 96. They were also listed as more affordable than their neighbors to the north.

Even more controversial, however, is that California actually had four cities in the top 15. This made them the list's best state for tacos, an alarming and nearly blasphemous thing to suggest. Texas had three cities in the top 15, with Houston landing at 10 and Dallas lagging behind at 20.

The two top Texas cities will never agree on who is superior to each other, but they can agree on one thing. California is not the best taco state.
