Austin teams sweep 37th annual Rotary All Star Classic in Essex

A five-goal game and a goaltenders' showcase highlighted the 37th annual Rotary All Star Classic at Essex Skating Facility on Saturday.

The doubleheader featured the state's top high school senior girls and boys hockey players. The Austin Conference swept both games vs. Harris.

Details from Saturday's games:

Girls game: Austin 4, Harris 1

After a scoreless first period, Spaulding's Rebecca McKelvey and Hannah King staked Austin to a 2-0 advantage. McKelvey fired in two more goals, the latter on an empty net, to complete the hat trick for Austin.

Abigale Smith of Essex and Caitlyn Fielder of U-32 picked up assists while Spaulding's Rayna Long (six saves) and Mattie Cetin (seven saves) and Champlain Valley/Mount Manfield's Grace Ferguson (six saves) played in net for Austin.

For Harris, BFA-St. Albans' Grace Fraties scored, via an assist from teammate Annika Fersing in the second period. Burlington/Colchester's Olivia Dallamura (eight saves), Rutland's Sierra McDermott (six saves) and Rice's Sam Plunkett split time in net.

King was named team MVP for Austin; Sophie Trombley of Hartford nabbed the award for Harris.

Boys game: Austin 2, Harris 0

Essex's Gavin Blondin struck for the opening goal on a feed from BFA-St. Albans' Liam Wood in the second period. Then in the third, Brenden Tedeschi of U-32 knocked in an empty-netter on a pass from Essex's Keegan LaTulippe to clinch the shutout victory for Austin.

In net for Austin, Essex's Ian Boutin and Spaulding's Ian Longfellow each made three saves while Duncan Mathies of U-32 stopped six shots.

Andrew Libby of Rice posted nine saves while CVU's Jason Goulas and MMU's Declan Heney turned back eight shots apiece for Harris.

Blondin (Austin) and Stowe's Woody Reichelt (Harris) were named team MVPs.

Game organizers believed it was the largest attended Rotary crowd in recent years.
