Austin's airport adds nonstop route to Monterrey, Mexico: What you need to know

Austin just got another nonstop flight -- this time to Mexico.

Travelers can now fly directly between northeast Mexico and Austin on Spirit Airlines, which has just debuted a new daily, nonstop service.

Here's what to know:

You can fly from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport straight to Monterrey International Airport in the state capital of Nuevo León on Spirit, a leading low-cost airline.

“We know our Austin guests want more options for flights both in the U.S. and across Mexico, and we’re proud to offer the only nonstop flight between Austin and Monterrey as well as launch new nonstop service to Miami later this year,” said John Kirby, Spirit vice president of network planning.

Spirit is touting the flight as an easy weekend get-away to Mexico from Austin, as it is an hour and 10 minute flight.

“We are fast becoming not only a regional hub for Texas but also an international one as we add flights to all over the world," said Jacqueline Yaft, chief executive officer for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. "As a close neighbor, there are many connections, both personal and business, to Mexico most especially in Monterrey which is one of the most-visited cities in Mexico. “

Just the latest new route

The new service to Monterrey is just one of a number of new nonstop flights taking off from Austin. American Airlines recently announced it will begin direct flights between Austin and Memphis in January. Allegiant Air is the only other airline currently with a nonstop flight between Memphis and Austin.

Last year, American Airlines began flying 10 year-round and seasonal routes from Austin. The year-round routes are to Las Vegas, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando, Tampa, Washington, D.C., and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. The seasonal service is to Aspen, Colo., San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, and Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Swift growth for Austin's airport

Austin's airport has seen passenger growth sruge in recent years. According to Austin-Bergstrom officials, passenger traffic volume for July 2022 was up 28% compared to July 2021, with 1. 97 million passengers flying during the month.

The Austin business community has long pushed to bring in more nonstop flights, both in the U.S. and internationally. Airlines have expanded domestic flight offerings out of Austin in recent years, and several carriers have filled the gap in direct flights to Europe. British Airways started a direct route from Austin to London in 2014, and Virgin Atlantic now flies the same route. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines began direct service to Amsterdam in March.

The Austin Chamber of Commerce's air service task force is supporting airport expansion to help accommodate increased flight volumes in the future.

The airport's master plan calls for 20 new gates in the main terminal, additional ticketing and baggage space, and 2 million square feet of new terminal and concourse space to be added between 2019 and 2029. The airport has been struggling with capacity issues this year as increased travel demand and understaffing have led to long security lines.
