Australia’s daily COVID-19 cases lowest in 3 months

Australia reported its lowest one-day rise in new COVID-19 cases in nearly three months on Thursday (September 17).

An ecouraging sign that states will also begin to ease restrictions further.

Australia's Victoria state, the epicenter of the latest outbreak, recorded just 28 cases in the past 24 hours.

Premier Daniel Andrews: "That is the first time that the case numbers have been in the twenties since the 24th of June. That is a fantastic outcome and a tribute to the hard work and the sacrifice, the contribution that every single Victorian is making and I want to say thank you and how proud I am."

Residents in regional areas of Australia's second-most populous state can now have outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people and cafes will be able to seat up to 50 people outside.

In Melbourne, the news has buoyed hopes that residents will soon be granted additional freedoms too.

But for now, the city is on an extended lockdown until September 28th.
