Author and adventurer to speak at Susquehanna on Monday

Nov. 9—Author and adventurer Ken Ilgunas will present the lecture "The Right to Roam: A Vision for a 21st Century Commons" on Monday at Susquehanna University.

The 7 p.m. event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Benjamin Apple meeting rooms 1 — 5 at the Degenstein Center.

Ilgunas will talk about his 1,700-mile hike across the Great Plains and how it inspired him to call for an American "right to roam" and opening up private property in the U.S. for public recreation.

An award-winning author who has worked as a journalist and backcountry ranger in Alaska, he has hitchhiked 10,000 miles across North America, paddled 1,000 miles across Ontario in a birchbark canoe and walked 1,700 miles across the Great Plains, following the proposed route of the Keystone XL pipeline.

Ilgunas has a bachelor's degree from SUNY Buffalo in history and English, and a master's degree in liberal studies from Duke University. He currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
