Author to speak about addiction and loss at Southeastern social work event in Lakeland

Southeastern University’s Department of Social Work will host its annual Social Work Community Night on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Welcome Center’s Lake Bonny Room.

David Magee, bestselling author of “Dear William: A Father’s Memoir of Addiction, Recovery, Love, and Loss,” is the guest speaker. Magee is the host of “The Mayo Lab Podcast with David Magee,” a national recovery advisor for the Integrative Life Network, and the creator and director of operations of the William Magee Institute for Student Wellbeing at the University of Mississippi.

The event will provide education on the risks, emerging trends, harm reduction efforts, pharmaceutical accountability, and increased overdose and deaths associated with the opioid and fentanyl epidemic, SEU said in a news release.

A panel with experts from Polk and Orange counties will discuss the impact the crisis has had on their surrounding communities.

The event is free and open to the public. Two free Continuing Education units will be available for clinical social workers, marriage and family counselors, and mental health counselors in attendance.
