Authorities arrest man in Dell Rapids, charged with burglary, after hours-long pursuit

A 37-year-old man in Minnehaha County, charged with first degree robbery and first degree burglary, was arrested Tuesday night in Dell Rapids by the Sioux Falls Police Department and the Minnehaha Sheriff’s Office.

The situation started with deputies finding a stalled, stolen vehicle in Dell Rapids, according to Cpt. Josh Phillips, from the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, who spoke about the incident at Wednesday's weeekly city press briefing. As they were processing the scene, the deputies were called in for a burglary at a residence close by.

Phillips said residents reported to have found the man in their garage with a gun, which authorities say he stole from the residence, and proceeded to threaten them with the weapon for their car keys. He fled the garage and headed south, which is when the residents called the police.

The suspect was later found about a mile from the residence and was arrested by the joint efforts of the Sioux Falls Police Department and their highway patrol and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office.

Phillips said they had reason to believe that the suspect was involved in a pursuit with the sheriff’s office earlier that day in the stolen vehicle that deputies initially found.

The suspect has been charged with first degree burglary, two counts of aggravated assault, first degree attempted robbery, possession of controlled substance and committing a felony with a firearm.

Authorities have still not found all the things stolen by the suspect and have asked residents in the area to check their security cameras for footage between 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

The suspect has been assigned a bond amount of $200,000 in a court hearing at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
