CHOCTAW — Authorities continue to investigate a shooting Friday night at a local high school football game that left a 16-year-old boy dead and several others injured.

Players and fans at the game between Del City and Choctaw scrambled for cover when multiple gunshots were fired during the third quarter.

Authorities said the boy who died was a Midwest City High School student.

Several victims were transported to area hospitals and treated for their injuries.

Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said shots were fired by an unknown number of individuals at the game. An off-duty Del City police officer working security fired at least one shot.

Authorities believe an argument between at least two males led to the shooting.

Investigators recovered two guns and eight rounds at the scene.

Authorities had not announced an arrest in the case by Sunday afternoon.

“We’re continuing to investigate, and we’re continuing to interview people, but there are no new updates,” Marshall told The Oklahoman.

Superintendent David Reid of Choctaw-Nicoma Park Schools announced in a statement that this week’s football games will be postponed.

“On any given week, the football team, band, color guard, AFJROTC, cheer, pom, middle and elementary school athletes, etc. participate,” Reid said. “Students from each of these groups were greatly affected by Friday night’s events. For this reason, we will be postponing all football games for the week of August 28th – September 2nd. This will allow coaches, directors, sponsors, etc. additional time to attend to the social and psychological needs created by this tragic event.”

School officials said grief counselors will be made available to students.

“This tragedy was traumatizing to people from many of our schools,” Mid-Del Schools Superintendent Rick Cobb said in a statement. "Midwest City High School students lost a classmate. Children throughout the Del City feeder pattern who were in attendance at the game experienced something that none of us should ever have to see or hear."

Cobb added: “I’m proud of how our students and staff handled themselves during the chaos. That said, recovering from grief and trauma is a process. It takes time and support. We will make every effort to provide that support to our students and staff.”

More gun incidents reported at Oklahoma high school games

Del City was impacted earlier this year by another shooting at a sporting event.

Shots were fired Jan. 17 inside Del City High School's John Smith Fieldhouse after a boys basketball game between Del City and Millwood.

More shots were reported in the school parking lot after officers evacuated the gym.

One person was hit by gunfire, and an 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting.

This weekend’s shooting occurred the same night a 16-year-old boy waved a gun at a football game between Bentonville West (Arkansas) and Booker T. Washington in Tulsa.

Authorities said a brief stampede occurred when people who saw the weapon started running.

No one was injured. Authorities said everyone was evacuated safely.

Police said the suspect ran away and dropped the pistol. Officers recovered the weapon.

On Saturday during a football game between Locust Grove and Pryor, a student was reported to have been seen with a gun.

“Within minutes, our team was able to locate the Pryor High School student and recover a firearm that was unloaded,” Locust Grove Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Stokes said in a statement. “The student was arrested and transported off the premises without further incident.”
