Missing jet skier Tony Nieves recovered from Lake Ontario

UPDATE (June 32, 2022): Monroe County sheriff's deputies on Thursday found the body of a missing Rochester man who was last seen Saturday morning on a jet ski in Lake Ontario.

Deputy Brandon Hurley on Thursday evening said that the Monroe County Sheriff's Offices Scuba and Marine units found the body of Onofhil Isaac Nieves, 43, who goes by "Tony" around 8 a.m. near Durand Beach. His body was positively identified by the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Nieves’ family and friends during this difficult time," Hurley said.

ORIGINAL STORY (June 21, 2022): Monroe County sheriff's deputies have identified the missing man last seen on a jet ski in Lake Ontario Saturday morning.

Onofhil Isaac Nieves, 43, of Rochester was reported missing at 10:21 a.m. Saturday. Deputies responded to the Durand Beach area Saturday after witnesses reported seeing a jet skier in distress near Rock Beach Road in Irondequoit. Other witnesses later found the jet ski unoccupied.

Sheriff's deputies, along with members of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Rochester Fire Department, New York State Police and the Royal Canadian Air Force, started the search Saturday but suspended efforts due to unsafe weather conditions.

Authorities also searched the water and nearby on the ground on Sunday and Monday but did not locate Nieves, who goes by the name "Tony."

Deputies resumed search efforts at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities are asking all vessels to avoid the area of the search to ensure that additional watercraft in the area do not hinder search efforts.
