LITTLE EGG HARBOR−A township woman and her ex-husband have been identified as the victim and killer in a murder-suicide that took place Saturday in Little Egg Harbor.

Kimberly Hoffman, 49, of Little Egg Harbor was slain by her ex-husband, Carl Schulz, Jr., 52, also of the township, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a statement.

An investigation by the Major Crime Unit of the prosecutor's office and Little Egg Harbor detectives revealed that Schulz killed his ex-wife and a family dog before turning the gun on himself, Billhimer said.

Police went to Hoffman's residence on Whitemarsh Court about 5:10 a.m. in response to a 911 call from a woman who said someone was breaking into her apartment, Billhimer and township Police Chief James Hawkins said Saturday.

The officers, who forced entry into the apartment, encountered the shocking scene of a woman with an apparent gunshot wound to the face, a dog, also shot to death, and a man with a gunshot wound to the head who was still conscious, authorities said.

The man was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he died of his injuries.

Billhimer did not elaborate on the determination that Schulz was the killer.
