Authorities: Lawrence man shot during argument over garbage can

Dec. 9—A Lawrence County man shot in the right shoulder this morning during an argument with a neighbor over a garbage can was taken to Huntsville Hospital by medical helicopter for treatment, authorities said.

Shane Gholston, 36, of Lawrence County 314, was injured by a shot from a 9mm Taurus, the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. His condition wasn't available.

Clendon Jones, 67, a neighbor of Gholston's, was questioned about the shooting and released. The shooting occurred at Jones' residence on Lawrence County 314, the release said.

"It is our understanding that Jones and Gholston got into an argument over a garbage can," the release said. "Witnesses state that the gun went off accidentally while both parties were fighting to gain control over the gun."

Sheriff Max Sanders said findings in the case will turned over to the District Attorney's Office.
