Authorities probing homicide of inmate

Oct. 7—Local and state authorities are investigating the death of a 39-year-old inmate at Baldwin State Prison near Milledgeville.

The Union-Recorder has learned from authorities that the death is being treated as a homicide.

It was unclear at press time Friday whether anyone has been detained or arrested in connection with the case at this time.

Baldwin County Deputy Coroner Foster Hurt identified the victim as Johnny Vaughn.

Hurt said he received a telephone call to go to Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin hospital late Wednesday afternoon.

"I received the call from the Atrium Health Navicent, The Medical Center's transfer call center," Hurt told the newspaper in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon.

The inmate was discovered unconscious in a bathroom by someone at the prison.

Hurt said he was informed by prison officials that life-saving measures were undertaken.

"They tried to resuscitate the victim using CPR," Hurt said.

Grady Emergency Medical Services was also called to go to the prison, which is located on Laying Farm Road.

Vaughn was taken from the prison by ambulance to the local hospital. He later was pronounced dead by an emergency department physician, according to the deputy coroner.

"He had some stab wounds and other injuries," Hurt said.

An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death was scheduled to be performed Friday morning at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory in Dry Branch.
