Authorities recover Des Moines man's body after he went missing while tubing on Raccoon River

The body of a man who went missing Sunday while tubing on the Raccoon River in Dallas County was recovered Tuesday morning.

Authorities received calls around 4:30 p.m. Sunday about tubers in distress on the Raccoon River between Adel and Van Meter. Ricco Morrow, 34, of Des Moines went missing around that time; his body was located downriver Tuesday morning, Van Meter Police Chief Bill Daggett said.

The stretch of North Raccoon and Raccoon rivers from Dallas County's Puckerbush access to Van Meter is popular with tubers and paddlers. New Interstate 80 bridges are being built on the Raccoon River between De Soto and Van Meter. Water from the river is being routed through diversion channels to essentially make river water go under the construction site, said Daggett.

Rico Morrow, 34, of Des Moines went missing while tubing along this portion of the Raccoon River in Dallas County on July 4, 2022; his body was recovered July 5.

Morrow was tubing with a group of people who did not realize the diversion tubes were there, according to Daggett, who said Morrow apparently got into the water to help two teenagers in distress.

The Raccoon River will be shut down to all recreation between the Puckerbrush Access and Van Meter because of the construction, Daggett said.
