PPB: Man shot, killed by Portland police during robbery report near Mall 205

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man is dead after three officers shot him Wednesday afternoon in the Hazelwood Neighborhood near Mall 205, according to Portland police.

Officers responded to a large department store at the mall after receiving a report that someone “in a previously reported robbery was attempting to steal merchandise.” They tried to arrest the man in the parking lot after watching him leave the store, but say he ran toward the west side of the mall.

PPB reported that “there was a confrontation and shots were fired by officers,” but did not specify what the “confrontation” entailed.

Although paramedics responded to the scene, the man died before he could be taken to the hospital. Officials say they found a gun beside him. No officers were injured.

PPB Chief Bob Day released the following statement Wednesday night:

“Use of deadly force by the police always has a significant impact on the members of the police bureau, the family of the involved person, and our whole community. I look forward to learning more about this incident after Detectives have time to do a complete, thorough investigation, and I want to assure the community that we will share more about the circumstances as soon as we can. But knowing that the suspect was armed is a sobering reminder of the dangers of policework. This has been a challenging week where Bureau members have been investigating homicides and multiple fatal crashes, and I’m grateful for the professional work being done by PPB members.”

The parking lot of Mall 205 was closed throughout the afternoon as police shut down Southeast 96th Avenue between Washington Street and Main Street.

An investigation is ongoing. PPB says it will conduct an internal review of the shooting and the moments that led up to it.

Following at least two homicides and multiple deadly crashes this week, Day said the greater impact on the community is not lost on him.

“We are going to have some challenges and this week, I think we’re going to have some challenges in decreasing that concern we have around public safety,” he said.

PPB said body cameras were not worn during this incident because they won’t be rolled out force-wide until 2024.
