New auto dealer begins sales at old American Car Center location

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Many were left with confusion and frustration after Memphis-based American Car Center closed its doors nationwide last year, but now cars are being sold again at one of their former locations.

At the property that once housed the American Car Center on 6400 Winchester Road, there’s activity on the lot again.

It raises questions after the former business, nicknamed the “King of Credit,” filed for bankruptcy protection and abruptly closed last spring.

It left employees without jobs and customers, like one man who didn’t want his name used, wondering where to make their car payment and fearing their car would be repossessed.

“Yeah, if they are the ‘King of Credit,’ how are they going to let somebody down? They say we are the bank. I don’t trust them,” said the customer. “I don’t know what kind of dealership is over there. I don’t know who is involved in that.”

WREG wanted to find out who is selling cars there, especially with the old signage still prominent. We learned the new company is called I-Finance LLC.

The Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South says I-Finance was established in 2010 in the Olive Branch area and has a C plus rating with the BBB.

WREG spoke by phone with Corey Scruggs, the owner of I-Finance. He said the business has no ties to American Car Center and is a completely different company.

“We had a dealership and were doing business at the same time they were,” Scruggs said. “So, when this opportunity became available with the space, we thought it would work well for us, and we would help serve that community along with the vehicle needs and service.”

The new company is putting distance between it, and the once-troubled American Car Center.

If you’re still having problems with the former American Car Center company, you can file a complaint with the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission and contact the Better Business Bureau.
