The autumnal equinox approaches. Here’s how quickly the metro-east will lose daylight

Fall officially begins Saturday, and along with turning leaves, metro-east residents can expect shorter days.

The autumnal equinox will happen at 1:50 a.m. Central Daylight Time Sept. 23. Daylight saving time will end Nov. 5, and southwestern Illinois residents will then see the sun set before 5 p.m.

“There are only two times of the year when the Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, resulting in a ‘nearly’ equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes. These events are referred to as Equinoxes,” the National Weather Service reports.

Although the coming weeks will bring less daylight across southwestern Illinois, Belleville residents can enjoy sunsets after 6 p.m. all the way through October.
