Avalon swimming pool will be closed for 2024 season for repairs

Some disappointing news for people who use the Avalon Borough Swimming Pool to cool off in the summer; it won’t open for the 2024 season.

According to a post on the borough website, the pool needs extensive repairs and plumbing system maintenance.

During the 2023 season, the Public Works Department discovered that the pool was leaking massive amounts of water. The leak cost the borough thousands of dollars.

“I mean moneywise we just we just can’t sustain that, I mean $80,000 this year,” said Lorraine Makatura, Avalon Borough Manager. “It’s a 300,000 gallon pool. We were filling it every day.”

Emergency repairs were conducted but more extensive work is needed, the post said.

The pool also needs a new liner, new off-season cover, and additional upgrades. The total cost of repairs is $350,000.

Makatura says the borough has looked at other options too.

“I mean we’ve talked about other things too like, should we close it completely and maybe do something else,” she said. “You know we’ve discussed like a splash pad thing but the community really likes the pool.”

The Borough said it’s applying for grants to cover the costs.

The rest of the park will remain open for the summer.

Residents took to social media, overall unhappy that the pool won’t open, leaving comments such as “unacceptable” and “This is ridiculous. Do the repairs before the season.”

A brother and sister tells Channel 11 their disappointed by the announcement.

“That’s like the main hangout spot in the summer,” said Jeremiah Knight.

“There’s not much things to do, so there’s even less things to do here,” said Aubree Knight.
