It was a devastating moment by all accounts, and one made all the more poignant now that a subtle Black Widow Easter egg has been uncovered by one eagle-eyed fan (via Comicbook.com).

Despite her having a lot to live for – including her very own solo movie – screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have defended the decision to kill Black Widow.

Explaining the reason for her unexpected arc, McFeely said: "Her journey, in our minds, had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back.

"She comes from such an abusive, terrible, mind-control background, so when she gets to Vormir and she has a chance to get the family back, that's a thing she would trade for."
