'Avengers: Endgame' Nearly Had A Thor Versus Thor Fight, Too
In the pantheon of arts and entertainment brothers, where would you rank Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo? They're less strikingly charismatic than your Gallaghers, less handsome than your Afflecks, less adept with a hamburger franchise than your Wahlbergs. But they're up there aren't they? They're way up there.
Anyway, they've been cracking on with rounds of interviews for this $2 billion-plus film of theirs, which seems a bit like overkill, but fair play to them for chucking interesting little tidbits out as they go. They've just given us another one, telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast that their original script featured a fight between Thor and Thor - one in his classic pre-Snap bewigged state, the other in his post-Snap chonky Dude state.
"We did have a sequence where they finally confront each other in Asgard," Joe said. His brother couldn't remember why that bit got binned off but Joe was clear: "I think it got overly complicated and we liked Cap versus Cap better."
Cap v Cap is very good indeed, to be fair, and as Joe pointed out things are already getting quite complex without having two sets of doppelgangers flying about.
"Once you start developing it, you can see how crowded it gets," he said. "We wanted to make sure we had story space to create real conflict for the Avengers that were going back [in time]."
In the end, Thor's big face-off with his past came in the form of his mum.
"I think there we also deferred to the storyline of Thor and his mother, which was more resonant," Anthony said. "That was more part of Thor's journey and repair than confronting his former self."
