The first and largest grant is up to $47 million through the next seven years for a research network called Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes, or ECHO, which is supported by the National Institutes of Health. It examines how influences such as sleep and nutrition can affect children both before and after birth.

The second grant is for $11 million over the next seven years from the National Institutes of Health, which will allow for the creation of the Maternal American Indian Rural Community Health Research (MARCH) Center of Excellence.

“Overall, our center is looking into how to reduce maternal mortality and severe health conditions as well as improving accessibility of care,” said Amy Elliott, the chief clinical research officer at Avera Research Institute.
