Average gas price in Georgia rises by nearly 20 cents in last week

Once again, the average price for a gallon of gas increased at the pump compared to a week ago.

AAA says Georgia drivers are now paying an average price of $3.25 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, which is 19 cents higher than it was a week ago at this time.

The recent price increase is due to Georgia ending its gas tax suspension just before midnight on Jan. 10. This tax suspension kept Georgia’s gas prices the lowest among southern states for several months.

“Several factors are contributing to the rise in gas prices across the state, such as the recent suspension of the state’s gas tax, an uptick in demand, and concerns that the global oil supply possibly will be impacted by Russia’s escalation of the war in Ukraine,” said Montrae Waiters, AAA-The Auto Club Group spokeswoman.

Monday’s state average is 52 cents more than a month ago and 12 cents more than this time last year. It now costs $48.75 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline.

As of Monday, the average price for a gallon of gas in Atlanta was $3.23.

The most expensive Georgia metro markets were Brunswick, Hinesville-Fort Stewart and Valdosta. In contrast, the least expensive Georgia markets were Dalton, Gainesville. and Catoosa-Dade-Walker.

The national average for a regular gallon of gas was $3.41.
