Avon Lake mayor looks forward to total eclipse events

AVON LAKE, Ohio (WJW) — For four minutes on April 8, the city of Avon Lake will be a primetime location in the path of totality.

Mayor Mark Spaetzel said he is hoping to make every second count.

“Our idea is to show ourselves in the best light,” Mayor Spaetzel said. “It’s an opportunity to show what a gem this community is and provide people an opportunity to see that.”

With big opportunity, comes big plans. Spaetzel highlighted two events in particular: An all-day festival for Eclipse Eve and a viewing party hosted at Avon Lake High School’s Memorial Stadium

“This is not going to be a one-day thing,” Mayor Spaetzel shared. “We will have people coming in Friday, Saturday, Sunday. They will want to go to restaurants and do different things. If they do it here, that brings dollars into the community.”

How many people come to the city by the shore remains unknown. However, estimates are already large enough to cancel all classes for the day at Avon Lake Public Schools.

“Truly, their school day would have ended right during the eclipse, there was just no way we could logistically make that work,” Mayor Spaetzel explained.

The bottom line is that the mayor just wants everyone to enjoy this unique experience.

With plans seemingly in place, the only thing left to do is hope for good weather on April 8.

“If it’s a day like today, we are going to have a lot of people. If it’s cloudy, we will still have a lot of people but maybe less,” Mayor Spaetzel said.
