Award-winning Broadway show among 11 things to do in Rockford this weekend

There are a number of events and activities in the region this weekend that might provide a remedy for the post-holiday blues.

The third full weekend in January offers everything from an award-winning Broadway show to a bowling-themed fundraiser for the arts.

Galaxy Adventures

What: Journey through hyperspace, practice your jedi skills and learn the ways of the force during a day devoted to space-themed movies.

When: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday

Where: Discovery Center Museum, 711 N. Main St., Rockford

Cost: $10 per person, free to Discovery Center members and children age 1 and younger.

IceHogs hockey

What: The Rockford IceHogs are home for two games this weekend.

When: 7 p.m. Friday versus Springfield Thunderbirds, 7 p.m. Saturday versus Chicago Wolves.

Broadway at the Coronado: The Book of Mormon

What: The Tony Award-Winning Best Musical comes to Rockford.

When: 8 p.m. Friday

Coffee with the Curator

What: Get a behind-the-scenes look into the process of curating the feature exhibition with Rockford Art Museum Executive Director/Curator Carrie Johnson.

Trinadora’s Third Friday Musical Potpourri

What: Janel Nelson and Ron Holm perform a musical mixture of vintage and contemporary pop, folk, country, jazz, blues, Latin, Celtic music.

Bowling extravaganza fundraiser

What: Come on out and give your support to Loves Park's very own Beauty in Motion Dance Arts. This fundraiser will be benefiting the Beauty in Motion Dance Arts Program.

When: 6:30 p.m. Saturday

Art of the Earth: In the King’s Court

What: Learn how artists and scientists can work together to create a visual representation of a time on Earth we have never seen before.

When: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday

Cost: $15 for non-member adults, $2 for members.

Cartoon Club: Things that Fly

What: You will learn how to draw animals, people, and everything else kids love to draw. Each session will feature step-by-step instructions based on a fun theme.

When: 11 a.m. Saturday

Cost: $10 for the public, $7 for museum members.

Ikebana in the Gardens

What: Ikebana, also known as the flower way (kado), developed alongside the tea ceremony (chado) with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan. The Ikenobo school of ikebana began more than 550 years ago. Through the flower way – carefully observing how plants grow and arranging ikebana – we make discoveries about nature, others and ourselves.

When: 1:30 p.m. Saturday

Where: Anderson Japanese Gardens, 318 Spring Creek Road, Rockford

Sky Carp Fest

What: The Beloit Sky Carp host their second annual Sky Carp Fest. Festival goers can participate in activities as well as meet the manager and some players.

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

Evon Sams

What: Enjoy the talents of multi-instrumentalist Evon Sams, who will perform arrangements of popular songs and original compositions.

Cost: $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $6 for students.
