Award-winning humanitarian and author Samantha Nutt to speak at UNH

DURHAM — Dr. Samantha Nutt, an award-winning humanitarian, bestselling author and the founder and president of War Child USA and War Child Canada, will be presenting a talk titled “Beyond the Headlines” on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Granite State Room at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. With more than two decades of experience working to promote and protect the rights of women and children in war zones throughout the world, Nutt will explore the facts and realities not often covered by news media, and what is really needed to make a lasting difference.

The event, which is sponsored by the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture’s Constance Ledward Rollins Distinguished Lecture Series, is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is requested at unhconnect.unh.edu. There will be a Q&A and book signing following Dr. Nutt’s talk.

“Our projects and programs serve vital roles in helping people connect science-based solutions to the challenges that face society, at home and around the world,” said Anthony S. Davis, dean of the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture. “Dr. Nutt’s presentation will help each of us, from emerging scholars to community leaders, better understand what meaningful actions we can take in a world dealing with so many intersecting emergencies.”

Nutt has worked with children and their families at the frontline of many of the world’s major crises — from Iraq to Afghanistan, Somalia to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone to Darfur, Sudan. With a career that has spanned more than two decades and dozens of conflict zones, her international work has benefited millions of war-affected children globally.

A leading authority on current affairs, conflict, international aid and foreign policy, Nutt is one of the most recognized voices in the humanitarian arena and a highly respected authority for many of North America’s leading media outlets. Her critically acclaimed book, "Damned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies and Aid," was a No. 1 bestseller and a new edition of "Damned Nations" was released in the U.S. and Canada in November 2018. Dr. Nutt’s TED Talk Live, “The Real Harm of the Global Arms Trade,” has had more than one million views on TED.com. She is a recipient of the prestigious Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honor, for her contributions to improving the plight of young people in the world’s worst conflict zones.

Dr. Nutt is also a staff physician at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Toronto.
