‘Go away’: New GOP Sen. wants Trump out

Another Republican lawmaker has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to step down.

Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, a conservative supporter of Trump until recently, called on Trump to resign on Sunday, saying the president could face criminal liability after he praised and egged on his supporters before they laid siege to the Capitol, where lawmakers were certifying the Electoral College vote for Joe Biden.

On NBC's "Meet the Press" Senator Toomey said, quote, "I think the best way for our country is for the president to resign and go away as soon as possible," calling Trump's behavior since the election "outrageous."

Toomey's call followed that of fellow Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski -- who also said he should resign -- and came as Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives prepared to move forward with impeachment proceedings for the second time.

In a preview of a "60 Minutes" interview with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Pelosi said there's support among lawmakers for impeaching Trump - but made it clear impeachment was not Democrats' first choice.

PELOSI: "Well I like the 25th because it gets rid of him. He's out of office. But there's strong support in the Congress for impeaching the President a second time."

While lawmakers could vote this week in the house, House Majority Whip James Clyburn suggested to CNN that they might wait to send the impeachment article to the Senate for a trial until after Biden's first 100 days in office, giving Congress time to approve Biden's Cabinet nominees and other agenda items.

If Trump is convicted in the Senate after he has left office, he could be banned from ever holding public office again as a sentence.

With just over a week left in White House, it's been reported that Trump has another round of presidential pardons lined up - and a visit to his U.S. Mexico border wall planned for Tuesday.
