Azores voted ‘Best Adventure Destination in the world’
A world of adventure is waiting for you in the middle of the Atlantic.
The Azores have been voted the “World’s Best Adventure Destination” by the 2023 World Travel Awards.
The announcement was made Friday in Dubai at the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony.
Heralded as “the Oscars of the travel industry,” the World Travel Awards (WTA) reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.
The Azores regional secretary for tourism, mobility and infrastructures said this award brings prestige to the Portuguese archipelago.
“Our region thus gains more prestige and consolidates its unique position worldwide in adventure and nature tourism,” said Berta Cabral. “We are a unique paradise in the world, capable of offering unforgettable experiences.”
Cabral said the recognition emphasizes that the Azores “really are an international success story in the area of sustainable tourism” and “a destination of excellence all year round with very diverse and rich experiences.”
Madeira’s wild beauty also proved a winner with voters, as the Atlantic archipelago collected ‘World’s Leading Island Destination’ at the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony 2023, which was held on Sept. 29 in Batumi, Georgia.
The other Portuguese 2023 WTA recipients are:
World’s Leading Emerging Tourism Destination 2023 – Braga;
World’s Leading Golf & Villa Resort 2023 – Dunas Douradas Beach Club, Almancial, Algarve;
World’s Leading Landmark Hotel 2023 – Bairro Alto Hotel, Lisbon;
World’s Leading Adventure Tourist Attraction 2023 – Passadiços do Paiva (Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark), Arouca;
World’s Leading Conservation Company 2023 – Parques de Sintra, Monte da Lua, Sintra;
World’s Responsible Tourism Award 2023 – Dark Sky Alqueva, Alentejo;
World’s Leading Airline to Africa 2023 – TAP Air Portugal;
World’s Leading Airline to South America 2023 – Tap Air Portugal.
