B.R.A.K.E.S. hosts training event to combat crashes caused by distracted driving

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Local Concord driving school B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe) went to the zMax Dragway on Sunday to train Charlotte teens and parents on ways to avoid crashes caused by distracted driving.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that more than 3,000 people died in distracted driving accidents in 2020. Through its research, NHTSA found that younger drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 are seen using handheld devices more than older drivers.

B.R.A.K.E.S. driving instructor, Jeff Swagger, told Channel 9 about the different courses all with the same goal of producing attentive drivers.

“We don’t get a pass because we’re attentive 90 percent of the time, we need to be 100 percent attentive while driving, so that’s what we’re focused on, and we do that through different courses out here, crash avoidance, panic breaking, skid recovery, running off the road, how to recover from that,” Swagger said.
