Baby alligators found in San Bernardino now living in Phelan sanctuary

Two alligators are enjoying life in Phelan after officers found the young reptiles while investigating reports of squatters in a San Bernardino neighborhood.

Last week, San Bernardino police officers said they found the two-and-a-half feet long alligators on Santa Fe Street. The city’s animal services department was then asked to assist, and the alligators were taken to the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter.

With the help of California Fish and Wildlife, animal service officials connected with the Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Phelan, which took the animals. The animal sanctuary is located at 8545 Buttemere Road in Phelan, and houses other alligators as part of their collection.

Forever Wild officials reported that the alligators are healthy and are doing well.

The gators, named Loki and Sylvie, after characters on the Disney+ series “Loki,” are being held in a quarantine environment while the sanctuary raises money to build them a more permanent home, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It will likely be years before the gators are large enough to be introduced into the Phelan’s sanctuary’s main pond, which is inhabited by eight adult alligators that each measure about 8 feet long.

Exotic animals are not permitted in most cities, including San Bernardino. They can carry disease, or in the case of an alligator, grow to become very dangerous, city officials said.

Authorities did not report if the squatters will face charges for keeping the alligators as pets.
