Baby born on dinghy and 44 migrants land in Spain

Emergency services reported that a woman gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday (April 29) night while she was travelling with the rest of the migrants the boat.

The baby and the mother were taken to a local hospital on Friday (April 30) to undergo a medical check.

Twenty-eight men, 11 women and 4 children were also travelling in the dinghy.

The number of undocumented migrants arriving in the Canary Islands was more than eight times higher last year than in 2019, with the impact of COVID-19 on tourism and other industries in north and sub-Saharan Africa pushing many more to embark on the dangerous journey.
