Baby Chimp Reunited With Mama After Emergency C-Section

Chimpanzee Mahale was reunited with her baby Kucheza on Thursday, November 17, after the pair were separated when the animal hospital team had to care for the newborn during a difficult delivery in Wichita, Kansas, the Sedgwick County Zoo said.

Kucheza, which the zoo said means “play” in Swahili, was born via emergency C-section on Tuesday.

Video posted by the Sedgwick County Zoo on Thursday shows the emotional moment when Mahale and Kucheza are reunited.

The zoo said that Mahale had not put her baby down since the reunion, even holding him when she was eating. They described her doting child-care routine as “groom, smooch, repeat.”

The heartwarming video went “viral,” according to news reports. Chris Evans took to Twitter to reshare the video, saying that he had watched it “100 times.” Credit: Sedgwick County Zoo via Storyful
