Baby Gray Whale Accompanies Mother on Migration Off California Coast

Footage of a baby gray whale migrating south with its mother was captured off the coast of Dana Point, California, after the pair were spotted by local whale watchers.

Taken during a whale-watching cruise organized by Capt Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari, a local company, the calf can be seen swimming alongside its mother as they head for warmer waters near Baja California, Mexico.

“Every year gray whales make a 12,000-mile roundtrip migration from their feeding grounds near Alaska to the mating and birthing lagoons in Baja California,” the company said. “Some gray whales give birth in the warm and protected lagoons in Baja, others give birth to calves during the migration route,” they said.
