‘Get my baby justice’: Broward mother asks public for help finding man who shot, killed 19-year-old daughter

Brittany Bucknor’s 19-year-old daughter graduated high school with honors. She liked dancing in TikToks with her friends. She made the best fried chicken in Broward County, her mother told reporters Friday, “and everyone knows that.”

But Destiny Bucknor was shot and killed by an unknown man while riding in a convertible Slingshot in unincorporated Broward on July 4. Three weeks later, detectives are still searching for a suspect, with little to no help from the public.

At least 10 people were in the vicinity when the shooting occurred, Broward Sheriff’s Detective Steve Novak said at a media briefing Friday morning. Some had spoken to the shooter seconds before he fired the shots that killed Destiny, who lived in Fort Lauderdale. None have come forward.

“We know there are witnesses out there,” Novak said Friday. “We know people know who did this.”

A man was driving the neon green Slingshot with Destiny Bucknor inside a little after 7 p.m. the day she died, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. He was a family member, Novak said, declining to provide further details on their relationship. The two were heading westbound on Northwest Eighth Street, approaching the 2900 block, when the man shot at them, striking Destiny.

The driver raced her to the hospital, where she later died.

Detectives are now looking into other recent incidents that occurred in the same area to see if they could be related to the shooting, Novak said, as well as any relationship between the people involved.

“We don’t know if the shooter knew either of the occupants of the vehicle at this point, but that’s what we are looking into,” he said.

Brittany Bucknor described her daughter as sweet, loving, and full of laughter. A TikTok video shared by the Sheriff’s Office shows her in a pink wig, dancing and smiling with her friends.

Destiny was Bucknor’s firstborn child, and her only girl.

“If the community could for once do something right and speak up and get my baby justice, I would greatly appreciate it,” she said. “Thank you.”
