Forget spending your maternity leave catching up on the NCT gossip in the local coffee shop. One mum had an altogether more ambitious plan for her time away from work – taking her baby backpacking!

Travel mad Karen Edwards, 31, and her husband Shaun Bayes decided that the birth of their newborn baby girl, Esmé was no reason to put away their passports. And despite their families calling them ‘completely nuts’ decided to head off around the world with their 10-week-old baby on board.

Talking to Mail Online, Karen said: “Both Shaun and I were keen backbackers before I fell pregnant and everyone thought we were completely nuts when we said that we were going to take Esmé when she arrived.”

In the ten months the trio were away they managed to squeeze in a visit to Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Hong Kong, amongst others.

From screaming on a plane, to finding somewhere to change a nappy, anyone who’s ever dared dip their toes into travel-with-a-baby will know how fraught it can sometimes be, and Karen admits her own travels weren’t always plain sailing, especially as they were often staying on-top-of one another in small hotel rooms.

But despite any difficulties, Karen believes the trip of a lifetime was completely worth any hardship.

“We have no regrets, she got to experience new sights, scenes and smells as she grew and that is incredible,” she said.

Now 17-months, Esmé’s parents are planning where to go for their next big adventure. And Karen has set up her own blog Travel Mad Mum, which she hopes will help encourage other new parents to venture abroad with their babies on board.
