Babycakes closes after 16 years in Quincy. A new business is about to move in

QUINCY − Wollaston pastry shop Babycakes has closed after 16 years in business.

In a message posted to Facebook, owner Mahriah Harrington said she will continue “to make sweet treats at our new location, The Merry Café," at 668 Broad St. in Weymouth.

“I’d like to thank everybody for their unconditional support over the last five years, especially through the pandemic,” she wrote.

The shop closed in early September.

A new eatery is already scheduled to move into 163 Beale St., the former site of Babycakes. At a licensing board meeting Sept. 26, Jordania Roach requested a common victualer license to open Amorepas Kitchen there.

Amorepas Kitchen’s website advertises desserts, charcuterie and custom gifts. The desserts include cake pops, cookies, fruit platters, chocolate-covered pretzels and, yes, cupcakes. The new bakery will also offer freshly baked breads, croissants, sandwiches and salads.

Roach said at the license board hearing that she will “bring some fresh items” to the location.

Her request for a license was approved unanimously. The website lists business hours as Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Amorepas Kitchen did not immediately respond to inquiries about an opening date.

Babycakes was opened in 2007 by Quincy native and restaurateur Kerri Delaney, who now owns and operates Kilroy’s on the Square and 16 C on Cottage Street in Quincy Center. Delaney sold the bakery to Harrington in 2016. Harrington had worked at Babycakes for many years before taking over.

The Merry Café opened in the summer of 2022 and serves about 20 brewed regular or flavored coffees, 23 hard ice cream options, milkshakes, sandwiches and more.
