Colton Underwood came out as gay on Wednesday morning (April 14) during an interview on Good Morning America. “I'm gay, and I came to terms with that earlier this year, and I've been processing it,” he said. “The next step in all of this is letting people know. I'm still nervous, but it's been a journey, for sure.”

“I'm emotional, but I'm emotional in such a good, happy, positive way,” Underwood said. “I'm the happiest and healthiest I've ever been in my life, and that means the world to me.”

It didn't take long for messages of support to start pouring in on social media—particularly from LGBTQIA+ people who want Underwood to know they have his back.

@colton I need you to know. I am proud of you! You are loved, and you will never be alone. It’s a process, but you’ve got the whole #LGBTQ behind you. We are here for you. We are your family now. Take a breath, it’s going to be fine,” one person tweeted.

@colton So proud of you today. I know that self-hate is powerful, but the world reveals its beauty after you say the words out loud. Welcome to the family. I wish you all the best!!” tweeted another.

A third added, “@colton congratulations on joining the alphabet mafia! So elated to have you in the family, I know it’s been a rough journey for you but we’re here to welcome you with open arms!”

On his future, Colton Underwood said in his GMA interview, “I still have a lot to work through. I'll just go on record saying I still haven't had an emotional connection with a man. I've never allowed myself to…I want to, more than anything. I'm looking for someone who can push me and challenge me in all the great ways.”
