Back-to-school events to help kids get ready for new school year

Businesses, organizations and ministries will be hosting back-to-school events on the weekends before school opens on Aug. 10.

Trinity's Day Spa will host its 2nd annual Back-to-School Braid Bash from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 8 at the King Center at 1028 NE 14th St.

Edwennia Moore, founder and owner of Trinity's Day Spa, said by being the owner of a kid's spa, she knows the importance of self-care.

"Going back to school is a huge deal," Moore said. "When they look good they can strive to be better."

Moore said she was intentional in hosting the braid bash on a Monday.

"Hosting it on a Monday sets the tone for the rest of the week," Moore said.

The braid bash will be free because she knows that some parents don't have the resources to get their children's hair ready for school, Moore said.

"This event takes the pressure off of the parents financially," Moore said. "This is one less thing to worry about."

A free manicure will also be provided by the Trinity's Day Spa staff and free book bags will be given by Tahirah Moore, the founder of a non-profit organization called Crammed.

Edweenia Moore is asking parents to pre-register their children before the event and to make sure the children's hair is washed and blown out.

The braiders will be Loni McNish, Takasia McLean, Robin McNair, Nikki Watts, Rachelle West, Lekeshia Cunningham, MyNique Wheeler, Kyia Lovett, A’Leshial Foster and Tiffany Richardson, and they will be putting in two to five feed-in braids only.

To pre-register for the event, call 352-240-6824 or email trinitydayspa@gmail.com.

Queen Vision Ministries, Anthony Washington of G.I.A.N.T. Ministries out of Jacksonville and Willie Wims of Wims Hair Studio will host Haircuts and the Cross on Aug. 3-6.

Queen Vision Ministries founder Sabriena Williams said they wanted to prepare young Black boys for the school year.

"Their image gives them a fresh start," Williams said. "We want the community to know that we are supporting them and we are looking forward to hosting more throughout the year."

Free haircuts will be given to boys between the ages of 6 to 13. There are only 20 spots available and haircuts will be given on a first come, first serve basis.

To register for a free hair cut, contact Williams at 386-438-9092, and all registrants must reserve a time for their haircut.

Jay-Jill Cosmetics Glamtique and Spa will host its back-to-school Glamcademy Spa and Beauty Boot Camp on Aug. 5-6. The cost for the boot camp is $125 and registrants can select which day to attend.

Jill Williams said she will be accepting five to seven girls ages 7 to 17 and each registrant will receive a skincare kit and learn how to take care of their skin.

"When I was growing up, I had the luxury of my mom teaching me about self care," she said. "When you teach them early, it carries on into adulthood."

The boot camp will be instructed by a licensed esthetician and cosmetologist teaching girls about the facial cleansing process, masking, moisturizing and personal hygiene.

To register, email jayjillcosmetics@gmail.com

There will be other back-to-school events such as:

• P.A.V.E. (People Against Violence Enterprises Inc.) will be host it's 23rd annual Stop the Violence Back-to-School Rally from 9 a.mm.-noon Saturday at the Santa Fe College gymnasium at 3205 NW 83rd St.
