Back-to-school shopping? Here's the latest on Tennessee tax-free weekend, deals, giveaways

Tennessee kicks off its tax-free weekend on Friday for clothing, school supplies and computers as parents and students gear up for a new school year.

The weekend comes amid a slew of back-to-school sales, special events and giveaways across Nashville. Metro Nashville Public Schools has its first day of school on Aug. 8, while others around the region start as early as Aug. 1.

Here's the rundown on what you need to know.

No state sales tax on school supplies

Tennessee's annual school supply sales tax holiday kicks off at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ends on Sunday at 11:59 p.m. While the state's usual 7% sales tax will be waived, local taxes may still apply. For a full list of tax-exempt items, along with information on other sales tax holidays, visit tn.gov/revenue/taxes/sales-and-use-tax/sales-tax-holiday.

Looking to stock up on lunch supplies and easy meals for the busy school year ahead? Tennessee will also nix state taxes on food and food ingredients starting at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 1 through 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Back-to-school sales in the Nashville area

Most major retailers in the greater Nashville area are offering sales for back-to-school supplies including Walmart, Target, Amazon, Office Depot and Best Buy. Major clothing stores are also offering sales, including TJ Maxx, Macy's, Ross, Kohl's, Gap and more.

Back-to-school events, giveaways in Nashville

Several organizations and businesses around Nashville are hosting back-to-school events with free school supplies ranging from pencils and paper to free backpacks, shoes and clothing. Here are just a few that we rounded up.

July 29: Back to School Block Party at Hadley Community Center

There will be a back-to-school block party at the Hadley Park Community Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The center is located at 1037 28th Ave. North in Nashville. The event will include school supply giveaways, a free raffle, live entertainment and food from local vendors. It's being hosted by Tperry Events LLC.

July 29: Back to School Bash at the Honey Alexander Center

The Honey Alexander Center, located at 2400 Clifton Ave. in Nashville, is hosting a back-to-school party that will include free backpacks, food, resources and other giveaways. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday and is first-come, first-served while supplies last. The event is being hosted in partnership with GetCoveredTenn, a nonprofit that provides free health insurance enrollment and health care advice.

Aug. 5: Back to School Night at the Nashville Sounds

The Nashville Sounds are hosting a special back to school night at their Aug. 5 game, with a Sounds-branded backpack giveaway for the first 1,000 kids ages 12 and under that arrive. There will also be free live music from School of Rock starting at 5:30 p.m., ahead of the first pitch at 6:15 p.m. The event is being presented by First Tennessee. Aug. 19: Back-to-School Bash at Cool Springs Galleria

The Cool Springs Galleria mall in Franklin will host a special back-to-school event featuring exclusive discounts and everything from hair braiding to a photo booth. United Way of Greater Nashville filled backpack giveaway

United Way of Greater Nashville teamed up with local donors to provide backpacks stuffed with school supplies for more than 14,000 students across nine Middle Tennessee counties. Individual donors and volunteers pitched in, along with the Tennessee Titans, Piedmont Natural Gas, MAPCO, Amazon, Pepsi and 6th Man Movers.

While the initial backpack distribution has already happened, extra pick-up days are available for those who missed it. Call 211 for more information.
