The Backstreet Boys Just Released an Acoustic Version of ‘I Want It That Way’ to Celebrate a Major Anniversary

It may be hard to believe, but our beloved Backstreet Boys released their album, Millennium, on May 18, 1999. Yup, that means it turns 20 years old this week. And the guys are celebrating in the best way possible—with a special acoustic version of their hit I Want It That Way.

The band, consisting of members Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Howie Dorough, dropped the new stripped-down version on Friday and we have to say it’s not like anything we’ve ever heard from these guys.

If you didn’t know, I Want It That Way premiered as the lead single off of Millennium, which was the band’s third studio album that sold 1.1 million copies in just the first week of sales. It also featured two other popular hits Larger Than Life and Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely.

The single itself immediately became a huge success across the globe, topping the charts at No. 1 in more than 25 countries (wow). And who could forget that airport-themed music video? Billboard even named it the greatest boy-band song of all time back in 2018. So it’s not surprising that the band chose the song to get the acoustic treatment in honor of the album’s 20-year anniversary.

The Backstreet Boys are also about to launch their DNA world tour, so…can we expect live performances of this acoustic version? We certainly hope so.

If you need us, we’ll be listening on repeat.
