Bad Bunny's Grammys Performance was Bursting with Puerto Rican Pride

Bad Bunny started off the 2023 Grammys with a bang.

The musician delivered a larger-than-life rendition of his Un Verano Sin Ti tracks "Después de la Playa" and "El Apagón" Sunday evening. The superstar kicked off the show parading through the crowd with massively sized puppets of Puerto Rican icons like Hector Lavoe and Roberto Clemente while a crew of dancers took over the venue floor as well as the stage. Bad Bunny kept his onstage outfit casual for the performance, opting for a classic white t-shirt, light blue trousers, Adidas sneakers, and a World Series baseball cap.

Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, is up for three awards this evening including Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Musica Urbana Album, and his biggest nod of the night; Album of the Year for his culture shifting project Un Verano Sin Ti. The singer's landmark project is the first ever Spanish language album to be nominated for Album of the Year and could make history again if he wins the evening's biggest award tonight. He is already a winner of four Latin Grammys and took home awards for Best Latin Pop Album and Best Musica Urbana for YHLQMDLG and El Último Tour Del Mundo in 2021 and 2022.

The musician reflected on his game-changing 2022 in a cover story for Harper's BAZAAR's Icons issue last year.

“[This is all] for more than just myself, but also for the fans and for all of the Latinos in the world,” he told BAZAAR. “I get emotional thinking about it … and I see it from the outside. If it wasn’t me but it was another artist, I would feel just as proud for them too...but obviously it’s more exciting that it is me.”
