Can you predict peak mosquito season like the weather? This app will give Lafayette forecast

Lafayette and Acadiana have had no shortage of mosquitoes over the last few years — particularly during active hurricane seasons — and a new tool from Google, Climate Engine and OFF! shows that the blood-sucking pests will be out-and-about this week.

OFF!, one of the largest manufacturers of mosquito repellant products, launched a mosquito forecast tool so users can see how if mosquitoes will be out in full force in their areas over the next seven days. Lafayette has a "severe" risk of mosquitoes over the next seven days, according to the forecast.

The forecast uses weather data from Climate Engine along with Google Cloud and research from SC Johnson, which owns OFF!, to determine the risk for mosquitos in a zip code.

For the next week, Lafayette has the highest risk rating of "severe," which means that conditions have been perfect for at least the last 14 days for mosquitoes to be active and breed, meaning there would likely be more of them.

The lowest rating is "low," which means there may be an odd mosquito or two buzzing around, but conditions haven't been ideal for their population to be too high.

More: Active 2022 hurricane season expected. Here's what Louisiana could see

South Louisiana has had its fair share of troubles with mosquitoes over the last couple of years, particularly with several major hurricanes flooding large parts of the state. The Gulf of Mexico is expected to have another above-average hurricane season this year, so the risk of mosquitoes likely isn't abating anytime soon.
