Bad News: The iPhone Notch Probably Isn't Going Anywhere
Despite disappointing sales and the sense that Apple's flagship phone is being left behind by full-screen competitors, the much-maligned notches in the iPhone's screen aren't going anywhere, according to industry insiders.
Forbes reports that the iPhone X and XRs' bezels are one of the biggest turn-offs that have knocked interest in the launch, but a new report by tech forecasters Barron's reckons that the three new versions of the iPhone due in 2019 will hold onto the notch.
"We think the three new iPhones in 2H19F will likely have the same form factors (body size and displays) as the 2H18 iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max [and 2017 iPhone X]," Barron's report says.
It also says that it expects to see "some added AR [augmented reality]-related features," added, and there are other reports that revised models could include one thing which fans are calling for: the much-mourned fingerprint-reading home button.
Why is the notch so despised by longtime Apple acolytes? While it's there to make Face ID work, it's very, very upsetting for some to see their gargantuan OLED screen nibbled into by a rounded trapezium. People balked at something they thought Steve Jobs would never have allowed to happen, and decided that was enough to hate the whole idea of the notch.
