Baggage fee concerns? Here's what every airline at Indianapolis airport charges

The cost of flying, like most things, is going up.

One carrier with flights to and from Indianapolis International Airport recently announced it was raising its price for checked baggage. American Airlines will charge $40 for the first bag on most flights — or $35 if you pay before you get to the airport.

“Fuel has gone up quite a bit. That’s a big component of our costs when we’re carrying bags,” Scott Chandler, American’s senior vice president of revenue management and loyalty, told USA TODAY. “We periodically look at all of our costs and where we can sort of help balance cost out with revenues.”

Here's what each airline at Indianapolis International Airport is charging in baggage fees in 2024.

Air Canada baggage fees

According to the company, when you travel on Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or Air Canada Express (flights operated by Jazz), your free baggage allowance is determined by your fare, destination, date of ticket purchase and loyalty program status.

For flights within the United States, Air Canada allows passengers to check the first bag for free, a second bag for $70 and additional bags for $225 each, according to the airline's baggage calculator.

For flights between the United States and Canada, it's $30 for the first bag, $50 for the second and $100 for each additional bag.

Alaska Airlines baggage fees

  • The first bag, according to Alaska Airlines, is $35; $45 for the second bag and $150 for each bag after that.

  • Oversize or overweight baggage from 51-100 pounds are $100. Bags with linear dimensions of 63-115" are $150.

  • Certain items, such as strollers, car seats, and mobility aids are exempt from baggage charges.

Fees for checked baggage can be paid during online check-in, at a bag tag station, or at any of our airport ticket counters. Checked baggage on Alaska Airlines can be subject to another airline's bag charges, the company said. Be sure to refer to your travel confirmation to determine which airline's baggage policy applies.

Allegiant Air baggage fees

Allegiant offers varying prices on baggage depending on how you book, when you book and your desired route. If purchased at the time of booking, fees can be cheaper than at the airport.

  • Carry-on bags range in price from $10-$75 depending on weight and size.

  • Bag fees paid at the airport are $75 each way per passenger, per bag for a carry-on bag and up to four per passenger.

  • Overweight bags 51-70 pounds are an additional $50; bags between 71-100 pounds are an additional $75.

American Airlines baggage fees

For domestic flights on American Airlines, the company charges $40 for the first bag, $45 for the second bag, $150 for the third bag and $200 for each additional bag.

For flights to Mexico and the Caribbean, the first bag is $35 and the second bag is $45.Transatlantic and transpacific flights have costs of $100 for the second bag and $200 for each additional bag. There is a fee of up to $75 for the first bag only for those flying on a Transatlantic Basic Economy fare.

Delta Airlines baggage fees

For bags under 50 pounds at Delta Airlines, the cost is $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second on domestic flights. For flights to Canada, the second bag cost is $50.

For flights to Mexico, first and second bag prices are $30 and $55 respectively. Fees for flights to Europe, it's $75 for the first bag and $100 for the second.

The checked baggage allowance each way price varies by route and fare class. Check Delta's baggage calculator and list of fees on the company's website.

Frontier Airlines baggage fees

Frontier Airlines has fees for both checked bags and carry-ons, and the earlier you book, the cheaper it will be. You can calculate fees using the airline's bag price checker for existing or new trips.

For example, if you were to fly from Indianapolis to Baltimore in July, your carry-on luggage could range in price from $55-$99, depending on whether you booked early on Frontier's website or mobile app, or if you waited until you were at the airport boarding gate. Your first checked bag would range in price from $50-$99 and a second check bag would begin at $70.

Southwest Airlines baggage fees

Southwest Airlines will accept the first two checked bags for free provided that the bags do not exceed 50 pounds and 62 inches. Three or more bags are $125 each. Oversized bags larger than 80" are $125.

Spirit Airlines baggage fees

Baggage fees on Spirit Airlines depend on how soon travelers want to fly and how soon they book a flight, the earlier, the cheaper. Carry-on luggage on a hypothetical flight from Indianapolis to Baltimore in late March would cost from $62 online to $99 at the gate. The first checked bag ranges from $57-$89. The second checked bag starts at $73 and the third checked bag would begin at $98.

Sun Country Airlines baggage fees

Bag prices on Sun Country Airlines will vary depending on a traveler's flight. To figure out the cost, the company has a baggage calculator on its website. A flight from Indianapolis to Las Vegas in May had no charge for carry-on item.

Overhead baggage costs were $40-$59 depending on whether a traveler books their flight early on the website or waits until they arrive at the airport. This was the same for the first checked bag, which ran $40-$59. The second and third bags ran $45-$65 depending on how soon the flight was booked.

United Airlines baggage fees

United Airlines charges $35 for the first bag, $45 for the second and $150 for all additional bags. For international flights, the first bag is free and the second is $100.

International Basic Economy checked baggage fees are $75 for the first bag and $100 for the second, according to the baggage calculator on its the website.

Overweight bags between 51 and 70 pounds are $200 per bag; and bags between 71 and 100 pounds are $400 extra per bag. Bags weighing more than 100 pounds will not be accepted.
