Along with a ship full of cruise passengers headed from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Bahamas, Carnival Cruise Line on Monday loaded its Liberty cruise ship with relief supplies destined for the hurricane-ravaged areas of the island nation.
Supplies include water — which Carnival said is the most critical need — along with generators, chain saws, prepared meals and medical supplies. Carnival Liberty’s four-day cruise departed Monday and is scheduled to reach Freeport on Thursday, reports Florida Today, which is part of the USA TODAY Network.
Carnival Pride’s seven-day cruise from Baltimore departed Sunday on a similar mission.
"We're here loading supplies, food and any other necessities needed for the people of the Bahamas," Carnival Liberty cruise director Nono Jones said in Florida. "We're doing our part … after the devastation that hit the Bahamas."
The shipment of relief supplies aboard the Liberty is part of Carnival's multifaceted hurricane relief effort that also includes:
A $2 million pledge from Carnival Corp. and the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation, for funding and in-kind support.
Underwriting the purchase and shipment of goods from South Florida in conjunction with Tropical Shipping and The Bahamas National Emergency Management Agency. Those shipments will continue throughout the month.
Partnering with two charities doing work in the Bahamas — World Central Kitchen, delivering meals, and Direct Relief, delivering medical supplies.
Asking its employees and customers to make monetary donations to these organizations to help them in their relief efforts.

"Our work to assist and support continues," Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy said in a statement. "And, as our ships and our guests return to Bahamian ports of call, our visits will make sure that our guests experience the beauty of the Bahamas and that the economy moves forward and jobs will be supported."

Carnival brings more than 2 million cruise passengers a year to the Bahamas. It plans 41 calls to Nassau, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays for the rest of September.
"We're in the Bahamas quite a bit," Jones said. "It is truly our home away from home here on the Carnival Liberty."
