Bail motion dropped, hearing scheduled Friday in CDCR counselor’s death

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Sebastian Parra, one of two men charged in the death of a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation counselor who was charging his electric vehicle, will remain in custody without bail.

A motion seeking to have bail reduced was dropped by defense counsel, a Superior Court judge said Thursday.

Judge David Wolf also said a motion filed on behalf of Parra’s co-defendant, Robert Pernell Roberts, could not proceed Thursday because the city attorney’s office hadn’t been notified.

The motion seeks personnel information from law enforcement officers involved in the case.

At the end of the hearing, Roberts, against Deputy Public Defender Gordon Lake’s advice, briefly addressed the court. He said he didn’t believe he was going to receive a fair trial.

“I have trial coming up soon and this is my life I’m fighting for,” he said.

Wolf thanked him for his comments, telling Roberts it would “break my heart” if he didn’t receive fair treatment.

Parra, 24, and Roberts, 30, have a hearing scheduled Friday to see if attorneys are ready to proceed to trial. Both men are charged with murder in the 2022 shooting death of Benny Alcala Jr., 43, who had been charging an electric vehicle near the Target on Stockdale Highway.
