Thinking about installing a pool? First, congratulations-I'm jealous. Second, might we suggest a design addition that you may never have heard of, but which is sure to add countless hours of poolside lounging to your season: The Baja shelf. What, exactly is the Baja shelf, you might ask? And how, precisely, will it change my poolside habits? Well, let me explain. The Baja shelf is a term for an extended top step into a pool, which becomes, essentially a de-facto shallow pool inside your bigger pool.

The Baja shelf is a game-changer for a few reasons. One, it creates a perfect middle ground between pool and poolside. You know those summer days where you'd love to be outside, but it's almost too hot to enjoy lounging? With your chairs perched on your Baja shelf, you can dangle your toes in the water, cooling down while remaining reclined. Now just pop a glass of rosé in your hand and you've got summer figured out.

The Baja shelf isn't only a game changer for adults: Its shallow waters make it, basically, a built-in kiddie pool next to your pool. Instead of having to lug the kids around the deep end with you, they can perch on the shelf and splash and play to their hearts content while you get your laps in-just feet away. (PSA: Please keep an eye on them, no matter where they are!) Pool designers Johnston Vidal say they see this setup often. Now, how much chicer is that than a blow-up kiddie pool?!
