Bake Off's Noel Fielding recalls Matt Lucas swearing at him during set "breakdown"

The Great British Bake Off presenter Noel Fielding has revealed that former co-host Matt Lucas swore at him during a "breakdown" on the set of the show.

Lucas presented the Channel 4 series for three years between 2020 and 2022, before he was replaced by current host, This Morning’s Alison Hammond.

Fielding was recently a guest on Ed Gamble and James Acaster’s podcast Off Menu, with both comedians having appeared on Bake Off’s celebrity specials in past years.

Acaster reflected on his memorable appearance and said that Fielding was "the only person who – at least to my face – was constantly finding [my breakdown] funny".

During Gamble’s episode, Lucas had to step in to replace a contestant who had dropped out last minute, and Fielding recalled what he was like during that experience.

He said: "He was having a breakdown as well. He told me to f**k off. Because I just came up and was laughing at him and he was like: ‘Oh, f**k off’. And then he went, ‘Oh I’m really sorry, I’m just really stressed’.

"I was like, ‘Are you joking?’ but it really got to him. I think he felt extra pressure because he was supposed to be good or something."

Fielding, who has fronted the baking show since 2017 when it moved from the BBC to Channel 4, also revealed that he has often been asked to don an apron himself for a celebrity special.

However, the actor and comedian said that this is unlikely to happen. He explained: "They’re always like to me, ‘You should go on it, as a joke’. And I’m like, ‘That’s not funny. That won’t be funny’."

Fielding appeared on the popular podcast to promote his new Apple TV+ series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, a surrealist take on the life of the famous highwayman.

The six-part series, which arrives on the streaming platform on March 1, also stars the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Asim Chaudhry, Tamsin Greig and Mark Heap.

The Great British Bake Off returns to Channel 4 later this year. The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin will premiere on Apple TV+ on March 1.
