The Cleveland Browns have turned a serious corner very quickly under Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry. Gone are the days of hoping for draft positioning and undrafted players to become quality starters. In are worries about being able to extend the contracts of players like Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward, Nick Chubb and Wyatt Teller, all acquired under former GM John Dorsey.

In is a winning record, a playoff appearance and a playoff victory.

This offseason has been full of a lot of discussions around extensions for the young Browns core and how the team can keep as many players together as possible. The biggest, given the importance of the quarterback position, is Mayfield’s contract.

The top pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Mayfield has had to deal with a lot of turnover and uncertainty in his short time in the NFL. In 2020, everything started to click as the season went on and, now, the concern isn’t about “if” he is the team’s future quarterback but how expensive it will be to keep him as the team’s future quarterback.

His agent gave a lot of hopes to fans as he shared with Tony Grossi that they do not plan to wait for other 2018 drafted quarterbacks to sign and are prepared for what is to come:

“We’re not going to be dragging it out,” Jack Mills told TheLandOnDemand.com. “I think there’s been enough contracts done for quarterbacks lately that give us a pretty good idea of what the market is. And, of course, we know that the [salary] cap isn’t going up this year but it’s going up next year and next.

“We pretty much know what’s coming on down the road and what’s been done. We don’t have any particular reluctance about doing a deal.”

He followed that up with his thought that a deal will get done this summer but with a caveat:

“But I think something will be done this summer,” Mills said. “As far as trying to get a deal done, I don’t know if it’ll get done. It’s something that would be pretty much in the team’s control.”

Earlier today, we covered a report that Mayfield could be the first deal done of the quarterbacks drafted in 2018. Now, these statements by his agent.

Mayfield’s agent believes a deal will get done this summer but put the ball squarely in Cleveland’s court on making it happen. The optimism is encouraging that Mayfield’s future will not dangle in the wind for too long.
