Former Oklahoma Sooners QB Baker Mayfield has finally made his debut for the Carolina Panthers. The 2017 Heisman winner was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Panthers back in July.

After head coach Matt Rhule said that he would start the first preseason game of the season, social media was buzzing. It seems that the QB battle between Mayfield and Sam Darnold has an early frontrunner.

Mayfield went 4/7 for 46 yards in Carolina’s preaseason opener against the Washington Commanders on the first drive of the game. The drive ended with a 41-yard field goal for the Panthers, courtesy of Zane Gonzalez.

Mayfield was 3 for 4 on third down.

Regardless of the limited action, it’s good to see Mayfield in a different uniform.

Sam Darnold took over for Mayfield and went 2 for 3 for 16 yards and a touchdown. Four different QBs saw action today for the Panthers, with P.J. Walker taking the bulk of the work. Former Ole Miss QB Matt Corral struggled, going 1 for 9 for only 11 yards.

The Panthers won the contest 23-21.

Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson, Mayfield’s replacement. made his long-awaited debut in a Cleveland Browns uniform yesterday in Jacksonville. Watson struggled, completing just one pass on five attempts for seven yards.

Matt Rhule has said that he hasn’t named a starting QB yet, so for now, the competition between Mayfield and Darnold will continue.
