A bakery is moving to Frankfort Avenue — and you'll recognize the spot.

Bae's Baekery is moving its main operation to the former Sweet Surrender Dessert Cafe spot at 1804 Frankfort Ave. Its previous space at 1164 S. Brook St. will become a headquarters for custom orders, catering and community events.

After a month or so of renovations, the new Bae's Baekery should open in May.

Co-owner Abigail Mattingly said as sad as she was to see Sweet Surrender close, the opportunity came just at the right time. She'd been looking for a new location and it ended up being a perfect fit.

"It was divine intervention to continue that legacy of another woman-owned bakery being there," she said. "Our facility in Old Louisville has so much kitchen and no front-of-house. The new one will give us an opportunity for customers to gather and enjoy our treats."

Sweet Surrender Dessert Cafe closed on Dec. 10 after more than 35 years in operation. Owner Jessica Haskell said the "challenges of the current labor market, inflation, and the continuing pandemic" created a perfect storm the shop could no longer weather.

Bae's Baekery began as a jumbo cookie company that took off. The micro-bakery operated inside Logan Street Market for a year. Now, operations are streamlined between the Old Louisville kitchen and the new Clifton store.

Mattingly is partnering with Susie Brown Bakery to offer breakfast sandwiches and biscuits at the new Bae's Baekery. The menu will also expand to include additional vegan and gluten-free options, puff pastries and cakes by the slice.

"After the jumbo stuffed cookies, our custom cakes became really popular," Mattingly said. "We also do a delicious cake by the slice, which I know people were sad about when Sweet Surrender closed and that was no longer an option. We're hoping to fill that gap for the community."

Bae's Baekery's new location will be open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with possible additional hours on Friday and Saturday.
